The past weekend was parents day at Rice University. My wife and I met some other parents, had some Bar-B-Q, watched the Rice Owls football game, and had a great time. If you don't know about the Rice University "Marching Owl Band" or "MOB" they are a small band and they really don't march! They have a lot of fun, and while the band plays, others in the band perform skits on field. Usually the skits make fun of which ever team they are playing. Any way the "MOB" is a "HOOT" to watch. One set of parents in particular, Tom and Joyce, stood out. Have you ever met someone and almost instantly find you have alot in common and find out that you have gone through alot of the same life experiences? That is what happened with them. I look forward to seeing them again in the future. In fact I am emailing Tom today. I am in the habit of using my right click button. A friend of mine was watching me on the computer one day and said "How did you make that window pop up?" I told him I used the right button on the mouse instead of the left button. He told me he has never clicked on the right button so I figure there are more of you who have never used it either. Lonnie Phillips You do know your mouse has two buttons on it don't you? You probably have a scroll wheel also. Without even paying attention you click on the left button and use the scroll wheel every time you are at the computer. It is so much of a routine you probably don't even realize your using them. But what about that right button? The left mouse button is the primary button, it is used most often and allows you to move objects, open them, or delete them by pointing, clicking and dragging. The scroll wheel is between the two buttons and is used to help scroll through documents and web pages more easily. But what about that right button? The right button or the secondary button displays a shortcut menu (also called a context menu) that shows options available to use with that item. To right-click an item, point to an item on the screen, press and then release (click) the right button. A list of shortcuts for that item will appear. Here is an example of how I use the right button. Have you ever been on a web site and clicked on a link but it takes you away from what you were reading and you have to hit your back button to get back to where you were? I really don't understand why web masters would let you click away from their web site...but that is another article for another day! I use the right button by putting my curser on the link and instead of clicking the left button, I click the right button and choose the option "Open In New Window". That way, instead of going to where the link was sending you, it shows up in another window on top of the page you are reading. So, when you are through looking at it, you can just close it out and still be on the same page you were originally on. Next time you are about to click on a link, use the right button instead. Here are some more examples: *Right-clicking within a word document shows you a shortcut menu to paste, change the indent, font, bullets or numbering. *Right-clicking on the recycle bin opens a shortcut menu to open the bin, empty it, create a shortcut or look at its properties. *Right-clicking in an email you would like to send opens a menu with paste, select all, align, indent, font, bullets, etc. *Right-clicking on a web page allows you to save the background as, copy the background, select all, create a shortcut, add to favorites, print, etc. *Right-clicking on the Start menu lists a shortcut menu with open, explore, search, scan for viruses, and properties. *Right-clicking on a document or folder on your desktop lists shortcuts to open, explore, search, scan, cut, copy, paste, create a shortcut, delete, rename, etc. Once you have opened the shortcut menu, you can left-click to choose one of the options. Right-clicking is safe and often faster than searching pull-down menus for the option you want. You can experiment with this feature since right-clicking will display the choices but NO action will be taken until you actually click on a menu item. Try right-clicking on an item on your desktop or on a link in a web site and experiment with what happens. So go ahead, click your right button now and see what comes up.
